Originally named 'Bharat Jodo Yatra,' the 'Bharat Nyay Yatra' was suggested unanimously by the Congress Working Committee, which advocated for Rahul Gandhi to commence the yatra from east to west.
Accepting this directive, the former Congress president agreed to lead the yatra from Manipur to Mumbai.
Informing about the Yatra, Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said, "Rahul Gandhi is doing a yatra with great experience from the first Bharat Jodo Yatra. During this yatra, Rahul and other party workers will interact with youth, women and marginalised people". The Bharat Nyay Yatra, which will be flagged off by party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, will be mostly covered by bus along with short stretches of walking, he said.
The yatra comes as Congress party initiates campaigning for the 2024 Lok Sabha election and attempts to bring together the divided INDIA alliance. Some of the states through which the Yatra is expected to traverse are currently ruled by parties that form part of the INDIA alliance.
The 'Bharat Nyay Yatra' will commence in Manipur and culminate in Mumbai, traversing through 14 states including Nagaland, Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Primarily to be organised as a bus yatra, the Congress implicated that the yatra would be used to directly interact with the diverse communities along the journey.
When questioned about the reasoning behind selecting Manipur as the starting point for the yatra, Venugopal explained that it holds significance as an integral part of the country. Additionally, the party aimed to initiate the process of "healing the wounds" of the people in the northeastern state.
Manipur has witnessed one of the most severe ethnic conflicts between the Kuki and Meitei communities, resulting in over 200 casualties and displacing nearly 60,000 individuals since the outbreak of violence on May 3.
Ramesh emphasized that while Gandhi addressed issues of economic disparities, polarization, and dictatorship during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, the Nyay Yatra will concentrate on advocating for social, economic, and political justice for the people of the nation.
Congress party will also be hosting a 'Hain Tayyar Hum' rally in Nagpur to celebrate party’s foundation day tomorrow.
