Match Analysis

The tournament opener took place at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru and it saw a staggering competition between bat and ball. Mumbai Indians women won the toss and elected to field. They conceded 171 for five against Delhi Capitals and then chased the target with four wickets in hand.

Delhi Capitals didn’t have the kind of start they would’ve wanted. Shafali Varma perished for just three. But after that skipper Meg Lanning (31:25b, 3x4, 1x6) and Alice Capsey (75:53b, 9x4, 3x6) played well for their 64-run stand. Then Jemimah Rodrigues (42:24b, 5x4, 2x6) chipped in with a brutal knock that made sure her team ended with a competitive total.

A few lusty blows by Marizanne Kapp in the end powered Delhi to 171 for five. For Mumbai, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amelia Kerr picked two wickets each.

Mumbai Indians were off to the worst possible start as Hayley Matthews perished for a two-ball duck. But keeper-batter Yastika Bhatia (57:45b, 8x4, 2x6) slammed a vital half-century to keep her team in the hunt. She added 50 runs with Nat Sciver-Brunt (19:17b, 2x4, 1x6) and later added 56 runs with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur.

The captain along with Amelia Kerr (24:18b, 3x4) kept her team in the hunt and put the opposition under pressure. With 12 runs needed off the last over, Harmanpreet (55:34b, 4x7, 1x6) brought her team close to the target and perished on the fifth ball. With five runs needed off one ball, S Sajana hit a big six to win the game for her team.
