13th Annual Brajanath Sharma Memorial Inter-State Drama Festival from September 21

Guwahati : The 13th Annual Brajanath Sharma Memorial Inter-State Drama Festival by well-known amateur theatre group SamaharNatya Gosthee will be held from 21st to 26th September 2019, at District Library Auditorium in the city. The festival is being organised in association with Indian Oil Corporation. 


On this occasion, Drama Festival Committee President MrLalitSarma said: “It is indeed a very happy moment for us to formally announce the programme of the festival. In the last 12 years, this festival has become a very important and landmark cultural event of the state. Now, it is a big responsibility on our shoulder to make it a grand success like the previous years.” 

Since 2007, Samahar has been organising this annual theatre extravaganza in the hallowed memory of Brajanath Sharma -- the father of Assamese moving (mobile) theatre. He was the pioneer of modern Assamese theatre and had first brought women on stage to introduce co-acting in the state in 1933. Sharma, the unique firebrand freedom fighter, had destroyed and set ablaze the British aerodrome at Bornagar, Sarbhog police station, post office etc in Barpeta district. 


The detailed programme for the 13th edition of the Festival has been finalised and the schedule is as follows – 
21st September – 6:00 pm – Inauguration ceremony of the Festival. The lamp will be lit by Brajanath Sharma’s daughter MsNirmala Mishra and granddaughter MsNeelakshi Mishra Sharma. The festival will be inaugurated by veteran film actor (of ‘ManiramDewan’ fame), senior advocate and social worker MrDilipHazarika. The souvenir of the festival ‘Kohinoor’ will be released by eminent journalist MrHaidorHussain. 
The ceremony will be followed by the play of the first night. Saanko from Guwahati will present “KAHAYA CHANDEE DASA”, written by eminent playwright Dr Sitanath Lahkar. Directed by DrDebashisSaikia and MrSatyajitGogoi, the play mainly talks about terrorism and surrendered militants.

22nd September – 4:30 pm & 6:45 pm (Two Shows) – (Manabendra Bhattacharyya Evening) – SamaharNatya Gosthee will stage the maiden show of their latest play “BESHYA”, written and directed by renowned playwright Dr Sitanath Lahkar. The drama highlights an important aspect of the present political scenario in the country.

23rd September – 6:30 pm – (BirendraMalakar Evening) – Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore’s famous play “DAKGHAR” will be presented by Barpeta’sPinak. The Assamese translation and direction is by MrUtpal Kumar Das. Written in 1912, this classic play deals with a child’s emotions and dreams.


24th September – 6:30 pm – (Deep Kumar Medhi Evening) – Written by MsRudrani Sharma and directed by MrGautamSaikia, Gauhati University’s NeinadGosthee’s “KALCHAKRA” is based on epic Mahabharata. With a new interpretation, the drama beautifully links the incidents of that era with present day happenings in the socio-politico sphere.

25th September – 6:30 pm – (SukumarPathak Evening) – JagiroadNatyaGosthiwill perform "BANDE MATARAM". The play, written and directed by well-known theatre personality MrTarunTalukdar, revolves around a freedom fighter. The play has a strong message against terrorism.

26th September – 6:30 pm – The organiserSamaharNatya Gosthee will present “CHORA UBACHA”. The comedy play, written and directed by Dr Sitanath Lahkar, is on the lives of three thieves. Through them, the playwright raises some pertinent questions on the peoples’ beliefs on supernatural powers. The extremely humorous play is a strong statement against superstition.
