IPL 2019: MS Dhoni out with back spasm, not captaining CSK for the 1st time since 2010

MS Dhoni was rested and Suresh Raina was handed over the captaincy of Chennai Super Kings as the defending champions took on Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday. MS Dhoni struggled with back spasm over the last two matches against Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders.

MS Dhoni has been in solid form for Chennai Super Kings in the 2019 IPL. He is their leading run-scorer with 230 runs from 8 matches including 2 fifties. Dhoni has led CSK to 7 wins out of 8 matches (before the SRH game) and they are table-toppers with 14 points.

This is the first time since 2010 that MS Dhoni is not captaining Chennai Super Kings. Under him, CSK have won 3 IPL titles. This is only the 4th IPL match MS Dhoni is not playing for Chennai Super Kings.

In MS Dhoni's absence, Suresh Raina led the Super Kings against 2018 runners-up Sunrisers Hyderabad. Raina is one of only 2 batsmen to score over 5000 runs in the Indian Premier League. Atfer CSK's win over KKR on April 14, MS Dhoni had said his back was a little tight due to a spasm.

"Back spasm," Dhoni said at the post-match presentation ceremony. "It's a little tight right now but hopefully, it will get better." At the toss in Hyderabad on Wednesday, Suresh Raina said MS Dhoni wanted to take rest against SRH and hopefully he would be back for CSK's next match against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

MS Dhoni was recently involved in a controversy when he stormed onto the field to argue with the umpires over a no-ball call during CSK's tense victory over Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur. Dhoni was subsequently fined 50 per cent of his match fee but Virender Sehwag said Dhoni got away lightly.
