NEW DELHI : In a controversial statement, Bangladesh High Commissioner, Syed Muazzem Ali on Thursday said that there are no illegal Bangladeshi migrants in Assam.
Participating in an interaction at the Indian Women's Press Corp (IWPC) here this afternoon, the High Commissioner however, added that there is an arrangement between the two countries and a mechanism has been worked out to take back criminals and others like citizens, who have overstayed.
However, whatever is happening in Assam is not related to this and Government of Bangladesh has not been informed about the ongoing NRC exercise in Assani. "It remains with State and Government of India has not informed us about it," he said.

The High Commissioner's view is in line with the Bangladesh Government's argument that they consider NRC in Assam as part of India's internal politics, especially State politics.
"And we chose to ignore the developments. We remained silent as there was no communication from the Government of India in this regard. We are not concerned about the political developments and policies in Assam State," Bangladesh's Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu told newsmen in Dhaka recently.
However, he also claimed that issues related to deportation have not been discussed between India and Bangladesh at any level.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh is also concerned over China's bid to divert the Brahmaputra.
The High Commissioner said that India should take a decision on signing multilateral level agreements.
There should be a Joint River Delta Management agreement instead of water-sharing agreement concerning the Brahmaputra. This proposal was given by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in one-to-one talks recently at Shanti Niketan in West Bengal.
