Tawang : The closing ceremony of the fifth ‘Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav’ being organized by the Union
Ministry of Culture under the aegis of Government of India in North East India from 23 to 31
March, 2017, is held on 25 March at Parade Ground of Tawang at 10:30 am. The ceremony is
being graced by Hon'ble Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Government of India, Shri
Kiren Rijiju as the Chief Guest, Hon'ble Minister Art and Culture, Government of Arunachal
Pradesh, Dr. Mohesh Chai as Guest of Honour and Hon'ble Member of Legislative Assembly,
Shri Tsering Tashi as Special Guest and other dignitaries. The nine day cultural extravaganza is
extended to other parts of North Eastern states like Dimapur (Nagaland), Majuli (Assam),
Imphal (Manipur), Aizawl (Mizoram), Gangtok (Sikkim), Shillong (Meghalaya) and Khowai
(Tripura) from 26 March to 31 March.
Wishing success to the Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav – North East at its closing ceremony in
Parade Ground, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Home Affairs of India, Shri Kiren
Rijiju thanked Hon’ble Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Culture and
Tourism, Dr. Mahesh Sharma and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India for organizing
a sanskritik mahotsav of such grandeur. He also extended appreciation to the Ministry of
Culture for choosing Tawang as the inaugural venue for the sanskritik mahasangam (RSM).
The three day cultural programme in Tawang has witnessed cultural confluence of more than
fifty art forms of India. Varied art forms like Buddhist Chanting, Vedic Chanting, Purulia
Chhau of West Bengal, Yoga, Bharatnatyam, Odishi, Kuchipudi, Sattriya, Kathakali, Kathak,
Manipuri, Mohiniyattam, Dhol Cholam of Manipur, Pung Cholam of Manipur, Conch, Bhortal
Nritya of Assam, Roff dance of Jammu and Kashmir, Sri Khol of West Bengal, Tati music of
Nagaland, Dholu Kunitha of Karnataka, Ghoomar of Gujarat, Bhavai, Chari, Gudum Baja of
Chhattisgarh, Bihu of Assam, Sambalpuri of Odisha, Zoi Mal Lok dance, Aji Lhamu, Domey
Tseric, Ponung, Erap, Sedibela, Brozai, Aney-na, Yak dance, Sapolo, Peacock dance, Pangchen
dance, Keng Cham, Sadinuk Tso, Rikhampada, Paku Itu, Lasso dance, Gasi Syo, Ola Sha have
been showcased at Parade Ground. Exhibition on Buddhist arts being organized at Parade
Ground of Tawang on the occasion of Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav, showcase the splendour
and magnificence of the cultural sphere. In the handicraft mela craftsmen from all over the
country display and sell handicrafts to the general public. Chefs of traditional delicacies from
different regions of the country treat the visitors to an unparalleled culinary experience.
The festival was inaugurated at Parade Ground of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh on 23 March
by Hon’ble Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Shri Pema Khandu, Hon’ble Minister Art and
Culture, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, Dr. Mohesh Chai and Hon’ble Member of
Legislative Assembly, Shri Tsering Tashi in presence of Dr. Om Prakash Bharti, Director (InCharge)
of NEZCC amidst almost 4000 audience. The essential thrust of Rashtriya Sanskriti
Mahotsav – North East is to present rich diversity and uniqueness of Indian culture and bind
the country in a single thread of culture and also to promote cultural inter-linkages amongst the
people of North East India thereby strengthening National integration. In the festival about
5,000 artists from North East India and 2,000 artists from across the country have been invited
to showcase India’s cultural heritage through folk and classical art forms in all its dimensions –
dance, music, theatre and puppetry. About 300 art forms are being showcased in the cultural
festival. The sanskritik yatra being organized on the occasion of Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav,
in which artists travel to almost 100 villages of North East India to interact with several
communities thereby proliferating cultural exchange.
Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav (RSM) has been conceptualized in 2015 by Ministry of Culture
under the aegis of Government of India to celebrate the spirit of Tradition, Culture, Heritage
and Diversity of incredible India. The main objective of the cultural extravaganza is to preserve,
promote and popularize the heritage, diversity and unity of Indian culture and reconnect the
new generation. In view of that, four Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav have been organized from 1
to 8 November, 2015 at IGNCA in New Delhi, 15 to 23 October, 2016 at IGNCA in New Delhi,
17 to 24 December, 2016 in Varanasi and 5 to 8 March, 2017 in Bengaluru. The festival is being
implemented through the seven Zonal Cultural Centres and other cultural organizations under
Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
