CM warns WR officials of dire consequences for failure to complete work in time

Dispur, March 28: Taking strong note on the delayed progress of repairing works of embankments in the state, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal warned all responsible officers of water resources department of dire consequences in the eventuality of failure to complete the works in time. While reviewing the progress of embankment repairing works in the chief minister’s conference room at Janata Bhawan today, Chief Minister Sonowal Sonowal said that a record amount of Rs. 347.67 crore had been released under SDRF for carrying out the strengthening and repairing of embankment and erosion protection works.

Stating that the embankments are the major safeguards of rural economy against the ravages of flood, the Chief Minister set April 30, 2017 as the final deadline to complete all strengthening and repairing works of embankments, failure of which will lead to stringent action against erring officials, Sonowal added.
Underlining the urgent need for developing a competitive temperament amongst the government departments, Chief Minister Sonowal said that the water resources department should strive hard to dispel its negative image. The Chief Minister also asked the department to show resolve to execute quality work and bring about a visible change.
Referring to the recent discussion with the Chairman of Brahmaputra Board held in New Delhi, the Chief Minister stressed on the need to develop stronger ties and better working relations between the Board and the water resources department.
Further stating that lack of quality construction firms and quality contractors is adversely impacting the implementation of construction projects in Assam, the Chief Minister advised the water resources department to take necessary steps for registering motivated entrepreneurs and develop their construction skills, manpower management etc.
State water resources minister Keshav Mahanta, senior officials of water resources and other departments were also present in the meeting.
