Guwahati : Banks and ATMs on Sunday witnessed more chaos and even longer queues across Assam as cash-starved people jostled to exchange and withdraw money, even as cash dispensing machines went dry soon after they were stocked due to heavy rush.
Long queues were witnessed at bank branches in Guwahati on Sunday. People were seen impatiently waiting outside ATMs to withdraw money.
Many ATMs ran out of cash in a few hours, leaving people frustrated, sources said.
Meanwhile, several ATMs are still non-functional, making people agitated about the lack of infrastructure preparedness for the note exchange programme.
About one lakh ATMs across the country are not functioning, sources said. Angry public shouted anti-Modi slogans outside a bank in Nalbari on Friday.
Banks have made additional arrangements for exchanging cash and deposit of old high denomination notes in order to handle heavy rush. Banks have been asked to be open on weekends including Sunday to deal with the situation.
Terming demonetisation of high-value currency notes a 'huge scam', Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal alleged on Saturday that the Narendra Modi government had warned its friends beforehand, and demanded its immediate roll back.
Kejriwal said the Centre's decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes is a 'surgical strike on the common man's small savings and not on black marketeers'. To substantiate his claim, he alleged that Sanjeev Kamboj, who heads the BJP's Punjab legal cell, was seen with new notes of Rs 2,000 on social media days before the PM announced the scheme.
