Facebook News Feed is 10 years old, Mark Zuckerberg thanks users

Facebook, Facebook News Feed, Facebook News Feed 10 years, News Feed, What is News Feed, Block people on Facebook News Feed, News Feed algorithm, 10 years of News Feed on Facebook

Facebook’s News Feed has turned 10 years old today, announced CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg, who also shared the Life-event on his personal page. Zuckerberg wrote a long post to mark 10 years of News Feed on Facebook. The Facebook CEO also shared how the News Feed was built and said it was a result of many ideas, and inventions.

“This invention is one of my favorite stories from Facebook’s history. Sometimes people talk about the “idea” behind Facebook, as if it was a single concept that came out fully formed. But Facebook, like everything, is made of many ideas and inventions,” he wrote.

Zuckerberg’s post reminds everyone of how Facebook initially had no News Feed, since it had started as a bunch of profiles for college students. Facebook was initially called as ‘thefacebook’ and had mostly details about a particular friend. There was no one space where updates from people would appear in one place, as they do now.

The post goes on to read, ” At the beginning of Facebook, there was no News Feed. For more than two years, Facebook was just a collection of profiles…With News Feed, all of a sudden you could share with all your friends at once. And you could see what was happening with all your friends in one place. News Feed was the first real social feed. It was such a fundamental idea that now, 10 years later, every major social app has its own equivalent of News Feed.”

Zuckerberg also notes in his post that not everyone liked the News Feed immediately, and how 1 million people created a protest group threatening to quit if they didn’t get Facebook back to what it was. “I remember there were actual protesters in the streets outside our office demanding we change,” says Mark Zuckerberg in his post. He’s also shared a photo of the original News Feed team at the moment it was launched.

The Facebook CEO calls “News Feed has been one of the big bets” from them and how it has also shaped the internet. Pretty much every other contemporary social network has a News Feed of sorts, even if they call it something else.

Zuckerberg also calls “News Feed” as “one of the most advanced systems” Facebook has built. He writes, “For more than 1 billion people every day, it considers everything your friends are posting and all of the media content you might be interested in, it considers how much you might care about updates from each person or interest, and then it tries to show you what you’ll find most important. Nothing like it has ever been built before.”

While the News Feed has changed drastically from how it first started for many users in 2006. The News Feed now gives users a lot more options, including the ability to unfollow friends or pages, or put updates from some people right on top. Facebook recently announced it will also start cracking down on click-bait headlines, where the content is not relevant to what is claimed. The News Feed has also become an important source of traffic for many publishers, as more and more people read and discover news via the social network.
